‘The Bachelorette’ recap: Dramatic exit, bombshell confession in part 1 of season finale

‘The Bachelorette’ recap: Dramatic exit, bombshell confession in part 1 of season finale

he producers of “The Bachelorette” decided to drag out the finale into two weeks, but after a shocking exit in Antigua during last night’s episode, it looks as though it may be worth it.
The week—also known as Fantasy Suite Week—started off quite normally.  Bachelorette Desiree Hartsock took Drew Kenney to a local festival in Antigua for some dancing and shopping, before offering him the chance to spend the night alone with her without any cameras—a “Bachelorette” tradition when it is down to three suitors.
“I’m ecstatic,” Drew said. “I don’t want to ever give up time with you.”
Des then took Chris Siegfried on a helicopter ride to nearby Barbuda Island for some fun in the sun.
His answer to the Fantasy Suite proposal?  “I think that it’s a great opportunity to spend more time with you.”
At this point, instead of cutting to the beginning of Brooks Forester’s tropical date, confused viewers watched an extended scene from his hometown date in Utah last week, shortly after Brooks said goodbye to Des.
An obviously upset and conflicted Brooks told his family that he was having some doubts.
“I love my relationship with Desiree and I keep wondering why it is that I’m not at the stage yet to say to Desiree, ‘I love you.’” he said. “The idea of proposing to her at the end of this makes me really uncomfortable.”
Uh oh.
In an almost cruel parallel testimonial, Des dished about how excited she was for her date with Brooks.
“Even though I’m falling in love with the other guys, I still have deeper feelings for Brooks,” she said. “I know that I am falling in love with him.”
After arriving in Antigua, Brooks invited Chris Harrison over to talk.
“I don’t feel like I’ll regret this…I think I’ve come to a conclusion where I don’t think that Des is the love of my life,” Brooks told the host. “I gave it everything that I had and I love so many things about Desiree, but I’m not in love with her.”
Meanwhile, Des is telling the camera, “I’m in love with Brooks and I miss him every day that I’m not with him.”
Brooks finally headed to the beach to meet an excited Des.  Her smile quickly faded, though, after seeing his gloomy expression.
Brooks took Des to the dock and proceeded to do a lot of rambling.  Des quickly understood what Brooks was getting at and her eyes filled up with tears.
“I know what you’re going to say,” she said sobbing.
“It takes me a while when I see you again to remember what we have,” Brooks said trying to explain himself.  “I feel like I lose it.”
Des managed to choke out a “Why now?” to which Brooks responded that he always felt he needed more time, so waited to make his decision.
“I don’t feel like the moments apart are hard enough,” he said.
In another bombshell, Des admitted something that most Bachelorettes don’t until the end of the finale—that she is indeed in love with Brooks.
“I love you, I do,” Des said through tears. “You’re the only one that I could say that to.  It sucks because for once in my life I was hopeful.  It just sucks that I loved you.  I do love you, regardless.”
Des confessed that she felt conflicted because she immediately developed feelings for Brooks and wanted to go on dates with him over other men.
“I didn’t want to share my heart, I wanted to give it to you,” she said.
After several more minutes of crying, Des walked Brooks out and then hysterically fled back to the dock.
Brooks couldn’t make himself leave right away, so he stayed and paced back and forth.
“This is the worst day of my life,” he said. “This is way worse than I thought this was going to be.”
“This throws everything off, having Brooks gone,” Des said. “It breaks my heart. I just can’t love [Drew and Chris] as much as they love me and that’s not what they deserve. Honestly, for me it’s over.”
Wow.

Dennis Farina, Detective in Life and TV, Dies at 69

Dennis Farina, Detective in Life and TV, Dies at 69

ennis Farina, who spent 20 years as a police officer in Chicago before he began patrolling Hollywood as a character actor, starring as a detective on the television shows “Law & Order” and “Crime Story” and sometimes crossing into crime, as he did in the movie “Get Shorty,” died on Monday in Scottsdale, Ariz. He was 69.

His publicist, Lori De Waal, announced the death. She said he had recently had a blood clot in his lung.

Mr. Farina eventually had a longer career as an actor than he did in law enforcement, infusing dozens of roles with world-weary credibility and a convincing nexus of nose and mustache.

He had been working as a detective in a special burglary unit in Chicago when a mutual friend introduced him to the director Michael Mann, who was making his first feature film, “Thief.” Mr. Farina was initially a consultant for the movie before being given a small role as a crime boss’s enforcer. The film, which starred James Caan, was released in 1981.

For several years afterward, Mr. Farina juggled his police job with local theater roles and appearances in movies and television shows. He was often cast by Mr. Mann, including in several episodes of his hit show “Miami Vice.”

Mr. Farina quit police work after Mr. Mann cast him in 1986 in the NBC series “Crime Story” as Lt. Mike Torello, a detective who pursues a Chicago mobster to Las Vegas. “Crime Story” was well regarded by critics but lasted just two seasons.

Mr. Farina’s work in “Crime Story” led to a role in the 1986 film “Manhunter,” which Mr. Mann also directed. In 1988 Mr. Farina appeared in the film “Midnight Run” and in 1998 in Steven Spielberg’s World War II epic, “Saving Private Ryan.”

One of his most notable characters was the mobster Ray (Bones) Barboni in the 1995 film “Get Shorty,” based on the novel by Elmore Leonard. The movie, which also starred John Travolta, Gene Hackman, Rene Russo and Danny DeVito, was a critical and commercial success; Janet Maslin, writing in The New York Times, called Mr. Farina’s work “a funny deadpan performance.”

The quality of roles he accepted declined for a time after “Get Shorty” — he appeared in a short-lived sitcom on NBC, “ In-Laws,” and in several disappointing films, including “Stealing Harvard” — but his fortunes improved in 2004, when he was cast as the dapper detective Joe Fontana on “Law & Order.”

In a radio interview several years ago, Mr. Farina said his character on that show was “firm but fair” and “took advantage of every inch that he could, and if that didn’t work sometimes maybe he had to stretch things a little.”

Mr. Farina said he was honored to be on the show, one of the longest-running in television history, but was also amused, as a former detective, by the increasing number of programs that emphasized the roles of scientists in solving crimes.

“While forensics plays a huge part in law enforcement nowadays, you still need the foot soldiers,” he told The Times in 2004. “You still need the guy who can knock on the door, you still need the guy who can write down the license plate numbers.”

In 2012, Mr. Farina appeared on the short-lived HBO series “Luck” as a henchman to a horse-racing gambler played by Dustin Hoffman. The show, which had its premiere in 2012, ceased filming in March after three horses died during production.

He most recently appeared on the Fox comedy “New Girl” and was in two movies tentatively scheduled for release this year, “Authors Anonymous” and “Lucky Stiff.”

Mr. Farina was born on Feb. 29, 1944, in Chicago. His survivors include his longtime companion, Marianne Cahill; three sons, Dennis Jr., Michael and Joseph, and six grandchildren. His first marriage ended in divorce.

Even after Mr. Farina left the Chicago Police Department in the mid-1980s, he continued to live in his hometown, and the characters he played were often from Chicago even if a show or movie was set elsewhere. The Chicago police superintendent, Garry F. McCarthy, said in a statement on Monday that Mr. Farina was “a true-blue Chicago character” who “never forgot where he came from.”

Mr. Farina said as much himself.

“My personality was formed by Chicago,“ he told Cigar Aficionado magazine in 1999. “It’s very American, very straightforward. If you can’t find it, or make it there, you won’t make it anywhere. It’s a very honest place.”

World awaits first glimpse of royal baby

As crowds outside the hospital waited for news about whether the Duchess of Cambridge will be
discharged from the $10,000 per night maternity ward where she has been since the early hours of Monday morning, it emerged that bookmakers here have chosen James and George as the favored names for the future king. Other picks include: Alexander, Richard, Louis, Philip, Albert, Charles, Michael, Paddy, Nelson, Robert, Kevin, Wayne and Silvio.

Irish bookmaker Paddy Power has the odds of the name James at 5/2 and George at 2/1. George is the name of Prince William's great-grandfather.

We know it's a boy. We don't know his name, although we do know he will travel under the Prince of Cambridge moniker. But the next order of business is this: We want to know what he looks like.

And the world is eager for that first glimpse.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge may be leaving St Mary's Hospital in central London on Tuesday after the royal baby was born Monday afternoon at 4:24 local time weighing in at 8lb. 6oz.

It is not clear how long the royal couple along with their new charge intend to stay at the private Lindo Wing of St Mary's, nor has the precise timing of the release of the baby's name been announced, but we do know that the Duke overnighted at the hospital with his new family and that the young couple "could not be happier" at the birth of their son.

Last night, thousands of well-wishers from around the world celebrated the birth outside Buckingham Palace.

"We were told it may not happen today (Monday), and we are going home tomorrow," said Asif Shah, a retired civil servant from Pakistan who was on vacation in London with his wife and daughter. "We feel very lucky," he said.

The arrival of the Prince of Cambridge, born on the warmest day in Britain for seven years, will be marked later today with a 41-gun royal salute from the King's Troop Royal Horse Artillery as the troop rides past Buckingham Palace and Green Park.

At the Tower of London, the Honourable Artillery Company will stage a separate 62-gun salute.

It is being reported that all of Her Majesty's ships, whether at home or abroad in international waters, are flying the Royal Navy Ensign flag to mark the occasion.

But the recent record hot weather here was set to break, with forecasters warning of heavy and thundery showers, bringing the risk of torrential downpours and blustery winds.

Comic-Con: Marvel’s ‘Age of Ultron,’ ‘Guardians of the Galaxy,’ more

Comic-Con: Marvel’s ‘Age of Ultron,’ ‘Guardians of the Galaxy,’ more

Marvel Studios pulled out all the stops for its Hall H panel presentation during Comic-Con on Saturday, wowing with surprise after surprise, including an introduction by Tom Hiddleston in full Loki costume, an unannounced discussion with the entire cast of “Guardians of the Galaxy,” and an appearance by “The Avengers” director Joss Whedon, who unveiled the sequel’s title: “The Avengers: Age of Ultron.”

The panel also focused on “Thor: The Dark World” and “Captain America: The Winter Soldier.”

The lights cut out as the panel began, and a disembodied voice hissed, “Humanity, humanity, look how far you’ve fallen,” chastising the audience for “sweltering in line” and “huddling in the dark like beasts … in this meager palace of Midgard, the arena they call Hall H.”

A spotlight revealed “Thor: The Dark World” costar Hiddleston, decked head to toe in his green and gold Loki attire.

“I am Loki, of Asgard! And I am burdened with glorious purpose. Stand back, you mewling quim!”

The audience erupted in cheers and began chanting, “Lo-ki! Lo-ki! Lo-ki!”

Hiddleston, fighting a grin to stay in character, raised his arms to accept the worship before silencing the 6,500-seat arena simply by bringing his finger to his lips.

“You should have let me rule you when you had the chance, yet here you are,” Hiddleston said. “Your ears yearn for untold stories. Your eyes crave unseen sights. Your imaginations ache and hunger. Where are your Avengers now? … Say my name. Say my name!”

When the fans took up the chant again, he said, “It seems I have an army. Feast your eyes!”

If the preview footage that followed is any indication, Loki will have a large role to play in “Thor: The Dark World,” and just might betray Chris Hemsworth’s hammer-wielding hero once again. The teaser also showed dark elves, giants and some fun banter between Thor and Sif, the Asgardian warrior woman played by Jaimie Alexander. Jane Foster (Natalie Portman) gets rainbow-whisked to Asgard, and in one scene slaps Loki across the face, saying, “That was for New York,” referring, of course, to the climactic battle in “The Avengers.”

The “Thor” presentation was followed by a panel discussion with the directors and stars of “Captain America: The Winter Soldier.” In the film, Chris Evans’ titular character is still adjusting to the modern world after his 65 years frozen in the Arctic.

“He’s getting there,” Evans said. “It’s not so much about his shock with tech.… It’s more about the societal difference with the ‘40s to today. I think he comes from a world where the people were more trusting.… The world today, it’s harder to know who’s right and who’s wrong.”

Evans mentioned that the compromise of civil liberties in the name of protecting the public is “harder for him to swallow.”

Evans was joined on the panel by directors Anthony Russo and Joe Russo as well as costars Scarlett Johansson (Natasha Romanoff / Black Widow), Samuel L. Jackson (Nick Fury), Cobie Smulders (Maria Hill), Sebastian Stan (Bucky Barnes), Anthony Mackie (new character the Falcon), Frank Grillo and Emily VanCamp.

Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige noted that Bucky Barnes’ role in the film will adhere closely to Ed Brubaker’s comic book story line of the same title. Fans caught a glimpse of the character picking up the Cap’s iconic shield in a teaser for the film. The preview footage also featured a brutal fight scene, in which Steve Rogers is trapped in an elevator and ambushed by goons. Of course, he single-handedly takes them all out.

“This film is gritty,” Johansson said. “It’s got some down-and-dirty, knuckle-baring fighting.”

The footage introduced Anthony Mackie as the Falcon, who appeared to be facing off against fighter jets.

“I have wings and guns,” Mackie said. “That’s all you need, right?”

The footage also showed off Robert Redford as Alexander Pierce, who tells Rogers, “Captain, to build a better world sometimes means tearing the old one down.”

Redford’s casting was in keeping with the tone the directors were hoping to strike.

“The movie is really based on, its tone is derived from ‘70s political thrillers,” Joe Russo said, calling the directing gig “a dream come true.”

COMIC-CON PHOTOS: Cosplay costumes, in all their crazy glory

Afterward, Feige brought the entire cast of “Guardians of the Galaxy” on stage, flown in this morning from the London set just for Comic-Con.

Director James Gunn took the stage, along with Chris Pratt (Star-Lord), Zoe Saldana (Gamora), Karen Gillan (Nebula), Michael Rooker (Yondu), Dave Bautista (Drax the Destroyer), Benicio Del Toro (the Collector), Lee Pace (Ronan the Accuser) and Djimon Hounsou (Korath).

Pratt, best known for his comedic “Parks and Recreation” role, talked about the physical transformation he has undergone for the part.

“I got the role six months ago, and they were like, ‘Great job, but you’re too fat,’” Pratt said. “I was like, ‘All right, I can work on that.’”

“Doctor Who” alum Karen Gillan also underwent a transformation for her character Nebula, who is bald in the comics.

“I might have done something a little bit crazy,” she said, pulling off a red-haired wig and revealing her shaved head to the stunned audience.

“I was a little worried that I was going to look like an overgrown fetus,” she said. “Maybe that’s true. But it’s liberating. It’s very liberating. Everyone here should shave their heads.”

Gillan and “The Walking Dead” actor Michael Rooker later compared head-smoothness, rubbing each other’s shorn scalps.

Perhaps most movingly, Dave Bautista appeared overwhelmed as he talked humbly about landing the role.

“There’s a point where I go to set every day and I still can’t freaking believe I got this job,” he said. “It’s something that I wanted more than anything I ever wanted in my life. When I got it, I broke down and cried like a little baby.”

Feige dismissed the notion that Bautista, best known for professional wrestling, was cast merely for his hulking size, saying that he auditioned seven or eight times for the part.

“Dave earned this job based on his acting ability, which is tremendous,” Feige said.

Marvel showed some scenes from the “Guardians of the Galaxy,” which has only been filming for 10 days. The tone is strikingly different from previous Marvel films, with more snark and irreverent humor. At one point, Star-Lord slowly cranks out his middle finger.

Pratt described his character as a scoundrel.

“He had a hard time as a kid, and now he goes around space, making out with hot alien girls and just being a rogue and a bit of a jerk, and through teaming up with these guys, finds a higher purpose for himself,” he said.

After “Guardians,” the audience chanted, “More! More! More!”

Feige introduced Joss Whedon to unveil the title of the “Avengers” sequel — “The Avengers: Age of Ultron.”

It’s unclear how closely the film will tie to the recently finished “Age of Ultron” story in Marvel Comics, or whether Ant-Man (the protagonist in another upcoming Marvel film, directed by Edgar Wright) will be part of the film. In the comics, Ultron is an insane, sentient robot who tries to destroy his creator, Dr. Henry Pym, the original Ant-Man.

5 ways to get fit with Facebook, Pinterest, and more

5 ways to get fit with Facebook, Pinterest, and more

I have to admit, I was reluctant to join Pinterest, I’m still a newbie on Instagram and I barely understand how to use my Google+ account. Each time a new social media platform pops up, I think, “I’m already on Facebook and Twitter, how the heck will I have time for another site or app?” But then I catch a glimmer of how valuable it can be, for both my clients and myself, and I sign up! If you haven’t yet embraced the health benefits of social media, here are five reasons to tech up, and get connected.
Find tips, recipes, and healthy info
The first night I joined Pinterest I was up half the evening creating boards, uploading photos, and pinning away. I’m a visual person, so I love the eye candy, but Pinterest is also overflowing with practical resources. I love pins like these on which fruits and veggies are in season, the basics of herbs, and how to cut an onion, and the site is also a clearinghouse for thousands of healthy recipes, eating plans, fitness programs, and inspirational quotes. I also find tons of amazing healthy resources through Facebook, like Greatist’s 44 healthy foods under $1, and this awesome pumpkin smoothie recipe from Artisana Foods.
Social media is also a great way to access experts you wouldn’t have the chance to meet in person. I do a live Q&A every other Thursday on Health’s Facebook page, and personally respond to each question and comment posted on my own page. I’ve also participated in several Twitter chats, and I just found out about Google+ “hangouts,” which I can’t wait to try. Here’s one, archived on YouTube, hosted by Kelly Ripa, featuring Michelle Obama and others, talking about fit families.
Health.com: Popular Spring Workouts on Pinterest
Fall in love with healthy food
We eat with our eyes as well as our stomachs, and platforms like Instagram and Pinterest have helped make healthy food mouth wateringly can’t-wait-to-eat enticing. Check out these roasted cabbage wedges, raw organic vegan Caesar salad, and frozen cherimoya fruit. Social media can introduce you to delicious ways to eat healthy foods you may not have thought about, or didn’t know could be so appealing, like adding avocado to a smoothie, or stirring chia seeds into your H2O.
Stay healthy on the road
One of my favorite things about social media is being able to instantly connect with people across the country and around the globe. I split my time between New York City and Los Angeles, but when I travel to other cities, I can post a quick note on Facebook or Twitter or check Yelp to find healthy restaurant suggestions, local fitness classes, and farmer’s markets. That’s how I found out about some great places, like The Plant CafĂ© in San Fran and Casa De Luz in Austin. I’m also happy to share my favorites with anyone who’ll be visiting the Big Apple or the City of Angels, like the amazing Union Square Greenmarket in NYC, and incredible LA hikes.
Health.com: Lose Weight and Get Fit with Your Phone
Declare your healthy intentions
Through social media, posting pics of what or where we eat, and what we do in our “leisure time” is part of how we define ourselves these days. I’ve had numerous clients use social media as a way of declaring their healthy goals, and letting others know that they’re striving to live a balanced, active life. You don’t have to become an evangelist, or record every minute of your life, but using social media to and “put yourself out there” in a healthy way can be a fantastic strategy for staying connected to your wellness goals.
Health.com: How-To Find Good Health Information Online
Secure support
One of my favorite things about social media is its ability to create communities and foster support. At times, especially after my latest book came out, I’ve felt like my Facebook page served as a mini support group, and I loved it. People who adopted my eating plan shared their progress and results, posted pics of their meals, cheered each other on, and shared tips and tricks for everything from dining out to coping with unsupportive family members. In my experience, the latter is key.
In my private practice, I’ve worked with numerous clients who are incredibly enthusiastic about transforming their eating habits, who struggle with a lack of support from their significant others, co-workers, and friends. When that’s the case, connecting with like-minded people on Facebook can be the only thing that prevents you from throwing in the towel, a pretty powerful benefit!

Actress Rae Dawn Chong uses racial slur to rip former co-star Oprah Winfrey

Actress Rae Dawn Chong uses racial slur to rip former co-star Oprah Winfrey

Rae Dawn Chong co-starred with Oprah Winfrey in "The Color Purple," and said the two were friends on set. But in a crude radio interview on Thursday filled with expletives and a racial slur, she said that soon changed.
Appearing on Matty P’s Radio Happy Hour for a segment later published on TMZ, Chong said Winfrey was "lovely" on the film, but became jealous when Chong got a part on Arnold Schwarzenegger's action flick "Commando.”
“That’s when she was a total biotch,” Chong said. "I starred in ‘Commando.’ And she just wasn’t having me. She’s competitive. She didn’t like me."
But Chong was just getting started.
“The thing that’s really great about Oprah that you can’t take away from her is that she’s a great brown-noser," she said."If you go into a room with her she will pick the most powerful person and will become best friends with them."
Then she went even further.
“She was that fat chick that was a cheerleader or the wannabe cheerleader in school that was the student council president that was the best friends with the principal," she said. "She was the fat chick in school that did everything and everyone loved her.”
Then Chong really got down and dirty, even dropping the n-word.
“If you look at the way [Oprah] looks, she looks like 60 years ago she would have been a house keeper, luckily."
She then used the n-word and said had Winfrey been a slave, she would have been working in the field.
Chong wrapped things up with a compliment of sorts.
“This woman is a miracle and I respect her and I say kudos to you, and I don’t give two cents about the other parts of it," she said. "She shifted the DNA in terms of our thinking of a woman of a certain size and a certain shade. I love her for that.”

Mom dies after falling from roller coaster at Six Flags in Texas, witnesses say

Mom dies after falling from roller coaster at Six Flags in Texas, witnesses say

A woman died Friday evening in an accident while riding the Texas Giant roller coaster at a Six Flags amusement park in North Texas, authorities said.
The accident happened just after 6:30 p.m. Friday at Six Flags Over Texas in Arlington. Park spokeswoman Sharon Parker confirmed that a woman died while riding the coaster at Six Flags Over Texas in Arlington but did not specify how she was killed.

A family in line behind the woman who fell told MyFoxDFW.com that she was on the ride with her daughter and son-in-law. The family said her seat restraint seemed to go down normally before the car left. They said when the train came back, the seat restraint was down.
The family said the woman's daughter and son-in-law were calling for help. They were screaming, "We need to go get my mom!"
Witnesses told local media outlets that the woman fell from the ride, which is billed as the tallest steel-hybrid roller coaster in the world.
"She goes up like this. Then when it drops to come down, that's when it (the safety bar) released and she just tumbled," said Carmen Brown of Arlington. Brown said she was waiting in line to get on the ride when the accident happened.
"They didn't secure her right. One of the employees from the park -- one of the ladies -- she asked her to click her more than once, and they were like, `As long you heard it click, you're OK.' Everybody else is like, `Click, click, click.' Hers only clicked once. Hers was the only one that went down once, and she didn't feel safe, but they let her still get on the ride," Brown told The Dallas Morning News.
MyFoxDFW.com reported that fire crews had to use a ladder truck to get to the platform below the roller coaster where the woman's body had fallen.
Arlington Fire Department investigators have not confirmed if the restraint came loose, according to the report. Investigators will try to determine Saturday if the woman was not properly secured by staff, as some witnesses accounts contend.
Six Flags expressed sadness over the death and said it was temporarily closing the section of the park around the accident site. It didn't say how long the area would be closed. A message left for Parker by The Associated Press wasn't returned.
"We are deeply saddened to share that earlier this evening an adult woman died in the park while on the Texas Giant. Park medical staff and local paramedics responded immediately. Since the safety of our guests and employees is our number one priority, the ride has been closed pending further investigation. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends during this difficult time," the statement said.
The Texas Giant reaches 14 stories high and has a drop of 79 degrees and a bank of 95 degrees. It can carry up to 24 riders. The ride first opened in 1990 as an all-wooden coaster but underwent a $10 million renovation in 2010 to install steel-hybrid rails before reopening in 2011.
Brown said she was next in line behind the woman and saw her being strapped into her seat next to her son.
"We heard her screaming. We were like, `Did she just fall?"' Brown said.
Arlington police Sgt. Christopher Cook, the department spokesman, referred all questions to Parker. No other details were available.
In 1999, a 28-year-old Arkansas woman drowned and 10 other passengers were injured when a raft-like boat on the Roaring Rapids ride at Six Flags overturned in 2 to 3 feet of water about 200 feet from the end of the ride.
Six Flags Over Texas opened in 1961 as the first amusement park in the Six Flags system. It is 17 miles west of downtown Dallas.

Kate Middleton embraces her royal roles

Kate Middleton embraces her royal roles

NICOLAS ASFOURI/AFP/GETTY IMAGES -  Catherine, the Duchess of Cambridge, in September 2012.

Autumn Brewington is editor of The Post’s op-ed page. She started and anchored The Post’s Royal Wedding Watch blog during the engagement of Prince William and Kate Middleton.

As of Wednesday, 78-year-old Terry Hutt had slept outside St. Mary’s Hospital for seven nights. He has been photographed in his Union Jack T-shirt, shorts and hat, under his Union Jack umbrella, holding handmade signs. He is participating in the #GreatKateWait, anticipating the arrival of Britain’s next prince or princess (if more enthusiastically than most).

Those of us not stalk- . . . er, staring in person at the maternity ward of the London hospital designated to deliver the first child of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge — better known as Prince William and Kate Middleton — have relied on the media circus outside, which has produced such voyeuristic aids as the Sun’s Royal Baby Monitor, a live stream of “all the comings and goings into and out of the Lindo Wing,” and Web and phone apps that combine live updates with royal and Middleton family histories.

The weeks-long Royal Baby Watch, punctuated by speculation that the duchess has in fact gone into labor or will be sneaked into another hospital, has engaged even the most eminent of relatives. In response to a child’s question this week about whether she preferred a great-grandson or great-granddaughter, Queen Elizabeth II remarked: “I don’t think I mind.” Then the sovereign noted: “I would very much like it to arrive. I’m going on holiday. No sign yet.”

Kate Middleton is giving birth to a future British monarch.

We love her for this.

We love her for everything — even if we don’t always think about why.

During William and Kate’s years-long courtship, media coverage of the couple included intense speculation that Kate, a commoner by birth, might not have been a suitable partner for the future king. For Americans, it is easy to view the couple’s narrative in fairy-tale terms: Ordinary girl marries tall, handsome prince, leveling society’s class system. This makes sense when one gets to appreciate the monarchy’s pomp, circumstance and bling without any of its expense or constitutional details.

But that story line is not quite right. Kate might not have been aristocracy, but neither was she the typical girl next door. The daughter of self-made millionaires, she had flexible hours working for her parents’ party-supply business, or not working, which allowed her to focus her life around her prince. And William and Kate’s popularity ensures the continuation of the monarchy — reinforcing, not eliminating, Britain’s class system.

Kate and William radiate an ordinariness that endears them and the monarchy to their future subjects. He grew up standing in line at amusement parks and McDonald’s because his mother, Diana, the late Princess of Wales, wanted him to understand life beyond the palace walls. His wife is the first future queen to consistently shop off the rack, enabling copy-Kates the world over to emulate her style. They go to movies and meals out — all of which makes them feel accessible, in the tradition of Diana, the “people’s princess.” We feel welcome to continue calling her Kate, despite all the palace fuss about Catherine, the Duchess of Cambridge. Even the publication of nude photos of the duchess last fall — the sort of scandal that blacklisted a royal just a generation ago — sparked more sympathy for the couple than criticism.

There are signs of modernization: After the “wedding of the century” in 2011, Britain and the commonwealth countries updated their laws of succession, which had favored male heirs. Whatever the baby’s gender, the first Prince or Princess of Cambridge will be third in line to the throne (bumping Uncle Prince Harry down to fourth). The baby’s birth will be announced on Twitter and posted on a gilded easel at the Buckingham Palace gates.

But for all the talk of William and Kate as modern young royals, they have clearly fallen into step with centuries-old traditions. Kate might have allegedly joked while they were dating that the prince was lucky to be going out with her. But she has embraced an extremely traditional role, with her life largely defined by her marriage, man and family. She is a happy homemaker, shopping for groceries, cooking dinner and reportedly even making her own jam, which she gives out as gifts. She has taken to royal life with aplomb, rarely putting a (perfectly shod) foot wrong, even in the glare of unprecedented media coverage. It is a supporting role in which she is seen and rarely heard.

On a certain level, the #GreatKateWait is the product of a popular illusion. Dazzled by a beautiful couple, people see youth and presume fresh thinking and 21st-century mores. But this is not a modern partnership of equals. People may toast the next generation — more than $90 million is forecast to be spent on alcohol alone as part of royal baby celebrations — but underneath the glamour, William and Kate’s relationship is as traditional as the monarchy he is destined to lead.

#1 ‘The Conjuring’ Scares Up $40M Weekend & Rare ‘A-’ CinemaScore; Other New Films Soft Or Sinking: ‘Red 2′, ‘Turbo’, ‘R.I.P.D.’

#1 ‘The Conjuring’ Scares Up $40M Weekend & Rare ‘A-’ CinemaScore; Other New Films Soft Or Sinking: ‘Red 2′, ‘Turbo’, ‘R.I.P.D.’

Sorry, tapping this out on my iPhone because no Internet service and probably no vacation either. [Long sigh...] Today was bad news for every new film except great news for Warner Bros/New Line’s The Conjuring (playing in 2,903 theaters) which not only opened #1 with a $40M weekend on tap but made $3.3M from Thursday late shows and Friday midnights. Horror flick also received a coveted ‘A-’ CinemaScore which should help word of mouth. That’s an unusually good grade for the genre where ‘D’ and ‘F’ have become commonplace. Lionsgate/Summit Entertainment’s Red 2 (3,016 theaters) received a strong ‘B+’ CinemaScore so today’s soft opening could become stronger Saturday if more adults turn out due to good word of mouth. Universal was expecting its Jonah Hex-meets-Men In Black retread R.I.P.D. (2,852 theaters) to rest in agony this weekend after long delays. So lousy reviews and its low ‘C+’ CinemaScore were no surprise. Still, it’s a financial disaster because of its too-big budget: my sources say it cost $182.1M but the production rebate was $28.1M so the aggregate net negative to Universal $154M. At least the studio has humongous worldwide profits from Despicable Me 2 to console it. Finally, DreamWorks Animations’  original non-sequel Turbo (3,806 theaters) which opened Wednesday will have the toon company’s worst opening since company started (figuring in inflation, higher ticket prices, and the 3D premium.) Then again, these animated pics have 4x-5x multiples around the globe so distributor Fox isn’t going to count it out yet. Sorry to repeat myself, but shame on all those morons at other media outlets gleefully declaring ‘bombs’ days before the movies even opened in one theater.  At least wait until opening night to detonate the humiliating headlines so heartbreaking for filmmakers. And it’s finally clear that Legendary Pictures’ too-expensive Pacific Rim may eke out $100M domestic all in – which means it, too, must depend on Warner Bros’ distribution overseas for most of its coin.

Here are Top Ten domestic estimates for Friday. Full analysis when blackout lifts.

1. The Conjuring (New Line/Warner Bros) NEW [Runs 2,903] R
Friday $16.5M, Weekend $39.0M

2. Despicable Me 2 (Illumination/Universal) Week 3 [Runs 3,820] PG
Friday $7.5M (-44%), Weekend $24.0M, Cume $275.0M

3. Grown Ups 2 (Columbia/Sony) Week 2 [Runs 3,491] PG13
Friday $6.5M (-60%), Weekend $20.0M, Cume $79.5M

4. Red 2 (Summit/Lionsgate) NEW [Runs 3,016] PG13
Friday $6.2M, Weekend $18.0M

5. Turbo (DreamWorks Animation/Fox) Week [Runs 3,806] PG
Friday $6.0M, Weekend $19.0M, Cume $27.7M

6. Pacific Rim (Legendary/Warner Bros) Week 2 [Runs 3,285] PG13
Friday $4.8M, Weekend $16.0M, Cume $68.0M

7. R.I.P.D. (Universal) NEW [Runs 2,852] PG13
Friday $4.8M, Weekend $12.0M

8. The Heat (Twentieth Century Fox) Week 4 [Runs 2,689] R
Friday $2.9M, Weekend $9.5M, Cume $129.5M

9. Monsters University (Pixar/Disney) Week 5 [Runs 2,186] G
Friday $1.6M, Weekend $5.3M, Cume $249.3M

10. World War Z (Paramount) Week 5 [Runs 2,066] PG13
Friday $1.5M, Weekend $5.0M, Cume $186.8M

Aside from Prinsloo showing off her assets and a very big smile on social media, the couple also celebrated Tuesday night by getting cozy during a romantic meal at Peels restaurant in New York City.
The two were "washing down burgers with champagne and canoodling in the booth," an onlooker told Us.
The blissful couple even left a 100% tip on their $50 bill.

WWE: Mr. Money in the Bank is... Randy Orton?!?

WWE: Mr. Money in the Bank is... Randy Orton?!?

My initial thought was, "this is a joke, right?"

As I watched Randy Orton climb a ladder and grab the briefcase to win the Money in the Bank All-Stars match, I was surprised. It was an impressive match, for sure. But Orton? He was my fifth or six choice of superstars who could win that match.

On Orton's win, I take two positions — one that is favorable to Orton and one that he probably won't like.

While Orton has been one of the biggest names in WWE for awhile, he hasn't been a key player in the WWE Championship picture for quite some time. There are a few reasons for that — CM Punk's rise and long title reign, John Cena's continued dominance and The Rock's return.

How long has it been since Orton last held the title? You have to go back to 2010. He won the belt at Night of Champions on Sept. 19, 2010. Two months later, he lost the belt to — wait for it — The Miz.

So, I see this as a way for WWE to get him back in the title picture, at least for a short time. He has a good fan base and if I had to give a review of his recent performances, it would be a positive assessment.

But there's another part of me that doesn't like this. I can sum up my disdain in a few questions.

- Why not give the briefcase to your hottest talent, Daniel Bryan? Sure, he's won it before. But that hasn't stopped WWE in the past. Obviously, they have big plans for Bryan. (He's facing John Cena for the WWE Championship at Summerslam.) But giving him the briefcase seemed like the best way to go.

- Why not give the briefcase to Rob Van Dam? Hear me out. He returned to a huge ovation at Money in the Bank. He's going to work, according to reports, a limited schedule. You know who else worked a limited schedule and was part of the title picture? The Rock. RVD doesn't have to be a permanent fixture in the main event scene, but letting him win the briefcase could have been a cool way to end MITB.

- Why not give the briefcase to Sheamus? Of the six men who participated in the MITB All-Stars match, he's the one that could use the boost. Right now, he doesn't have anything big going for him. No major storylines. No title chances on the horizon. Nothing. He could have used a victory in this match to give him that much needed boost.

The point of this isn't to trash Orton. It's to point out that other superstars could have benefited more from winning the briefcase. He seems to have the least to gain from winning the briefcase. But maybe WWE has big plans for him.
