Whitney Houston: Five songs to remember her by

Whitney Houston: Five songs to remember her by

Whitney Houston, pictured performing onstage in 1988, would have been 50 years old on Friday. She died in 2012. (David Corio / Getty Images)

Whitney Houston, the superstar vocalist whose hit tunes helped bridge the gap between pop and soul music, was born 50 years ago Friday, on Aug. 9, 1963, in Newark, N.J.

The birthday, of course, is one she didn't live to see: Houston died last year in Beverly Hills at the age of 48, plunging the music industry into turmoil the night before the Grammy Awards, which she so often dominated over the course of her nearly three-decade career.

Yet Houston's music lives on in recorded form -- Sirius XM is in the midst of a day-long tribute to the singer's work -- and in renditions by younger artists, including Beyoncé, whose Mrs. Carter Show tour has her tackling "I Will Always Love You," the Dolly Parton song Houston all but made her own.

PHOTOS: Celebrities react to the death of Whitney Houston

Listen to that classic -- along with four of Houston's other finest moments -- below.

"I Will Always Love You"

Recorded for the soundtrack to "The Bodyguard" (in which she starred opposite Kevin Costner), Houston's take on what started out as a country tune helped redefine soul singing in the 1990s as a showcase for skyscraping vocal technique.

"How Will I Know" (a cappella)

You'll find no more powerful demonstration of that technique than this vocals-only version of the bubbly dance tune from her self-titled 1985 debut. Jaw-dropping.

"Heartbreak Hotel"

A highlight from Houston's hip-hop-inspired "My Love Is Your Love," "Heartbreak Hotel" teamed the singer with Faith Evans and Kelly Price for a slow-burn kiss-off.

"Million Dollar Bill"

Houston's final studio album, 2009's "I Look to You," didn't reignite her career the way she and her longtime mentor, Clive Davis, had planned. But this lush retro-disco number, co-written and produced by Alicia Keys and Swizz Beatz, showed she could still target a pleasure center like few others.

"I'm Every Woman"

Oh, and speaking of disco...

Chris Brown done with ‘F.A.M.E.’? Singer tweets his next album may be his last

Chris Brown done with ‘F.A.M.E.’? Singer tweets his next album may be his last

Chris Brown announced he may retire from music via Twitter on Tuesday, Aug. 6.
Credit: Lester Cohen/Getty Images

In a pair of tweets Tuesday, R&B singer Chris Brown implied that he may quit the music business.

In the first tweet, which was later removed, Brown wrote “Don’t worry mainstream America. After this X album, it’ll probably be my last album.”

A subsequent tweet (also removed) elaborated. “Being famous is amazing when it’s for ur music and talent. I’m tired of being famous for a mistake I made when I was 18. I’m cool & over it!”

In 2009, Brown, 24, pled guilty to felony assault for attacking then-girlfriend Rihanna on the night of the Grammy Awards. He was sentenced to community service and five years of supervised probation, in addition to being ordered to stay away from the “We Found Love” singer.

In the years since the assault, the pop stars have maintained ties, collaborating on two songs in 2012. Earlier this year, the pair made headlines again when Rihanna confirmed to Rolling Stone that they were back together. She defended the reconciliation, telling the magazine, “he’s made a mistake, and he’s paid his dues.”

The public has been less willing to forgive Brown, who confirmed in May that he and Rihanna had broken up again. But the singer has still maintained a loyal fanbase, which he often refers to as “Team Breezy,” and he has seen continued success on the charts, where his 2011 album “F.A.M.E.” debuted at No. 1.

Brown has been known to use Twitter to defend his achievements. In an article last year, Post pop music critic Chris Richards examined the dichotomy between Brown’s fans and his critics, whose rivalry famously played out on the social media network as “F.A.M.E.” won Brown a Grammy for Best R&B album.

He’s given numerous apologies for attacking his then-girlfriend but has just as frequently squandered the world’s goodwill on Twitter. In the realm of social media, Brown doesn’t seem haunted by his past so much as annoyed by it. And he’s rallied his fans — who proudly identify themselves as members of “Team Breezy” — into an us-against-them mentality.
Chris Richards

“X” is scheduled for release on Aug. 20. The album includes the just-released single “Love More,” a collaboration with Nicki Minaj.

On the track, Brown croons “You say all you need is consistent love / When I try I swear it’s never enough — I messed up / Maybe this thing here just ain’t meant for us.”

And if Brown’s Twitter account is any indication, fans may not want to retire his proverbial jersey just yet.

Just last Friday, Brown tweeted, “Today is the first time since ‘run it’ I’ve been mesmerized and at the same time nervous,” referring to his 2005 single.

Brown, retweeted many times over, continued: “Let’s see if I can bring the old me back. Thank you.”

BET Awards 2013: Who stole the show?

BET Awards 2013: Who stole the show?

From left, Snoop Dogg, Pharrell Williams, Justin Timberlake and Charlie Wilson perform during the 2013 BET Awards at Nokia Theatre L.A. Live on June 30, 2013, in Los Angeles. / GETTY

Who won video of the year again?

The BET Awards were barely about the actually awards as wild performances stole the night. They also didn't present the top honor Sunday.

Janelle Monae ended the three and a half hour-plus event with a top notch performance of "Q.U.E.E.N." alongside Erykah Badu, who brought a white poodle onstage. It was just one of the night's best performances, which also featured stolen moments from a seductive Ciara, a slick Miguel, a random -- but welcomed -- reggae set and a playful Justin Timberlake with an even more playful Charlie Wilson.

Timberlake took a backseat to the soul singer, joining Wilson onstage for a medley of his solo and Gap Band hits.

Stevie Wonder, Jamie Foxx, Pharrell, Snoop Dogg and India.Arie were also part of the tribute to 60-year-old Wilson, who earned the lifetime achievement award.

"Charlie Wilson is soul music. His impact colors the work of many artists, which is basically my nice way of saying I and a lot of other artists have stolen from him," Timberlake said when presenting Wilson the award.

Wilson's lively stage presence was arguably the night's top moment, though others were on fire.

Ciara echoed Janet Jackson when she danced and sang her R&B hit "Body Party," while Dawn Penn, Chaka Demus & Pliers, Beenie Man and Elephant Man electrified the audience when they gave a colorful performance of reggae classics.

Many artists played double or triple duty onstage at the Nokia Theater L.A. Live. Badu sang with Monae and Kendrick Lamar, who also performed with 2 Chainz. Miguel sang alone, and with Mariah Carey and J. Cole, while Minaj performed with Ciara and Chris Brown. Pharrell helped out Wilson and Robin Thicke, who excitedly performed his current No. 1 hit, "Blurred Lines."

Drake, who didn't attend the awards show, led with 12 nominations, including five for video of the year, winning the top honor with "Started from the Bottom." The rapper-singer also won viewer's choice and best collaboration for his appearance on A$AP Rocky's "(Expletive) Problems" with Lamar and 2 Chainz.

Lamar tied Drake with three wins, taking home best new artist, male hip-hop artist and collaboration.

"Most importantly to my little home boys and my home girls back in the city, you looking at me on TV right now, I came up in that same county building, food stamps, welfare section eight ... this is living proof that you can do anything you put your mind to," said 26-year-old Lamar, who is from Compton.

Minaj and Brown picked up their fourth consecutive wins for best female hip-hop artist and the fandemonium award.

"Don't read the bull in the news, I'm a real dude," Brown told the crowd.

Brown opened the show with a medley of new songs, including one that featured vocals from late R&B singer Aaliyah and another with Minaj, who joined him onstage. BET couldn't bleep some of the rapper's expletives - much like the awards show last year. Expletives from Badu, Wayne Brady and the singers who performed with R. Kelly slipped, too.

Carey was angelic as she belted -- or lip synched -- her latest hit, "#Beautiful." After her performance, Twitter was abuzz with tweets about whether Carey had lip-synced her performance at the show. Meanwhile, an excited R. Kelly sang snippets of a dozen of his hits -- including "Bump N Grind" and "Ignition" -- as the crowd cheered on.

Host Chris Tucker sang and danced too - in tribute to Michael Jackson.

Miguel won the night's first award, best male R&B pop artist, beating out Brown, Timberlake, Usher and Bruno Mars.

"I got to really give it up to all the other guys in this category," Miguel said.

Don Cheadle presented Miguel with the award, and dedicated the night to the ailing Nelson Mandela.

"We want to take a moment and send our prayers and thoughts to a man who literally changed the world," he said. "This evening we would like to offer prayers and support and hope to the extraordinary Nelson Mandela and his family."

Jamie Foxx, wearing a shirt that featured a picture of Trayvon Martin, won best actor, and danced onstage with Kevin Hart when accepting the honor.

Hart, who hosted the BET Awards in the past, was overly excited onstage, even stealing the shine from Tucker, who was a mediocre host.

Rihanna won best female R&B pop artist and Macklemore & Ryan Lewis won best group.

Olympic gold medalist Gabby Douglas won sportswoman of the year and the youngstars award. She thanked BET for "just for embracing me after Olympics."

Selena Gomez’s Sexy Performance: Best Revenge Outfit Ever?

Selena Gomez’s Sexy Performance: Best Revenge Outfit Ever?

Justin Bieber, you may want to sit down. Justin’s ex hit the stage for a pre-taping of ‘Macy’s Fourth of July Spectacular’ on June 29 looking hotter than a bonfire.
What Selena Gomez wore during her performance for Macy’s Fourth of July Spectacular, we’re not even sure we can classify it as revenge dressing. It’s hotter than that. She singlehandedly brought a whole new meaning to the term when she took the stage at Liberty Park in New Jersey on June 29.

Selena Gomez’s Ultra-Sexy Fourth Of July Performance
Selena made jaws drop in just a firetruck red bra top and a flowing white high-low skirt. The outfit showed a large helping of cleavage, as well as Selena’s toned stomach and legs. The 20-year-old singer finished it off with a white pair of ankle-high gladiator sandals.

The “Come & Get It” singer’s sexy look was for a pre-taped performance part of Macy’s annual Fourth of July celebration, and being patriotic has never looked so good. Selena sang “Slow Down” for the horde of screaming fans; it’s the first time she’s performed the song live.

The 37th annual Fourth of July event will air on NBC on July 4 and will also feature Selena’s BFF Taylor Swift, Tim McGraw, Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon.

Selena Gomez: Looking For A Sexy New Guy?
Seeing Selena this hot likely makes Justin Bieber want to claw his eyes out, but the sexy, much more adult outfit is more than just for pure revenge — it’s also a sign of what Selena is looking for in a new man (emphasis on the word, “man”).

“She wants a sexy man,” a source close to the singer told HollywoodLife.com exclusively. The source also added that Selena is trying not to be distracted by boys right now, instead remaining “focused on herself and growing as a performer and making her fans happy.”

Well whatever she’s doing she should keep doing it — she looks incredible! Watch a video of her performance below and let us know what you think, HollywoodLifers!

American Music Awards 2012: Justin Bieber, Selena Gomez reunite at awards show after-party

Two days after reunion dinner turns nasty, 'Boyfriend' singer may be back together with his girlfriend

CELEBRITYVIBE/SPLASH NEWS

Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez attend the American Music Awards after-party at the Marriott Downtown Hotel Sunday night.
After dominating the American Music Awards Sunday night, Justin Bieber kept his winning streak going.

The 18-year-old pop star arrived at the music awards show with his mother, Pattie Mallette, as his date - but was spied leaving with Selena Gomez. Their latest reunion two days after their attempt at a reconciliation dinner at a Japanese restaurant in Los Angeles was cooked before the raw fish could even be served.

Confirmation that the on-again-off-again-on-again couple might be smoothing things over since their breakup earlier this month came from an unlikely source. Actress Jenny McCarthy, who grabbed Bieber and planted a kiss on his neck while presenting him with an award during the AMAs, provided Beliebers with some intel.

DANNY MOLOSHOK/REUTERS

Justin Bieber performs 'Beauty and a Beat' with Nicki Minaj at the American Music Awards.

Sources also told E! News that Bieber and Gomez were spotted walking hand-in-hand while exiting L.A.'s Nokia Theatre, where the awards show was held. It’s a far cry from the couple’s Friday date disaster in Encino, Calif., which ended with Gomez, 20, leaving just 10 minutes after arriving at the restaurant, TMZ reported.

Paparazzi captured photos of Bieber pursuing his long-time love to the gates of her home only to be rebuffed. Gomez was spotted the following night all smiles on a girl’s night out with fellow newly single gal pal Taylor Swift.
As the Daily News’ Confidenti@l reported the last week, “The “Never Say Never” singer has been desperately trying to win back Gomez since the couple split after two years. Bieber’s apparent dalliance with a Victoria’s Secret model has been cited as the cause of the breakup.

Justin Bieber accepts the award for favorite album - pop/rock for 'Believe' at Sunday's American Music Awards.

“He is having second thoughts,” a source told Confidenti@l. “He has been calling and texting her,” says a source, adding, “he’s been reaching out to her friends.”

Bieber enjoyed a Sunday night for the ages even before his love (re)connection, winning three awards, including Artist of the Year.
And an age inappropriate kiss from McCarthy, who’s 22 years his senior.
"Wow. I feel violated right now," Bieber said on stage, laughing.
"I did grab his butt," McCarthy told the Associated Press backstage.
"I couldn't help it. He was just so delicious.”

"Dancing With The Stars: All-Stars": Double elimination

"Dancing With The Stars: All-Stars": Double elimination

American voters circled their wagons around their own and sent a Frenchman packing on "Dancing With The Stars: All-Stars" Tuesday.

With the elimination of points laggard Kirstie Alley all but assured, the big question on double-elimination night was who the second unlucky contestant would be to fall short of making the semifinals.

Genial Gilles Marini, the suave French actor who spoke softly but carried a big six-pack, was the first big gun to go as the all-star edition of the show whittles itself down to the final few. It's a big loss of a performer who combined skill, sex appeal and real artistry.

"It was a wonderful experience, I got to do it twice," said Marini, who was consistently one of the top performers of this season. I think my favorite dance from Marini was his Bollywood routine, where he uncorked the bronzer bottle and went from French to Indian for a really fun routine.

"Gilles, what I love about him, every week, 100 percent, full-on, flat-out, giving it everything," said head judge Len Goodman.

Also bidding a long-overdue adieu, was Alley, the comic actress who, at 61 years old, couldn't keep pace with the younger dancers. But Alley did show them a thing or two about comic timing and audience manipulation. Alley hung on about three rounds past her actual skill level, which says a lot for her show biz savvy.

Comic actress Kirstie Alley and partner Maksim Chmerkovskiy perform a quick step in the second week of "Dancing With The Stars: All-Stars" Monday, Oct. 1, 2012

13 PHOTOS
"Dancing with the Stars: All-Stars"
"You know, the second time around was very special to me," Alley said after getting the bad news. "I just love dancing!"

Five teams made it to the semifinal show next week. Generally, in sports, a semifinal round has four competitors, but, whatever. The scores are all so high, and the remaining competitors are so closely packed together on the scoreboard that the audience vote will be a real deciding factor in the weeks to come.

Breathing a big sigh of relief are Apolo Ohno and Emmitt Smith, former "DWTS" champions who haven't quite hit their stride the second time around. The three remaining ladies, Shawn Johnson, Melissa Rycroft and Kelly Monaco, are a solid length ahead of the boys heading into the final stretch.

Next week, the stars will be performing to the music of Michael Jackson's "Bad" album. It will be the same week ABC airs a documentary special about the making of that classic album.

As part of the hijinks, the stars also assigned each other weird dances to perform next week to cryptic titles yet to be explained. Here's the zany lineup for next week:

"Surfer" Flamenco -- Kelly Monaco
"Caveman" Hustle -- Melissa Rycroft
"Espionage" Lindy Hop -- Emmitt Smith
"Big Top" Jazz -- Apolo Ohno
"Knight Rider" Banghra -- Shawn Johnson
It all leads to the finals of the all-star season in two weeks, which look to be a Shawn Johnson, Melissa Rycroft standoff -- if they can stay uninjured. The dancing and performance levels have been so high this season, it should be a great final two weeks.

But with the exits this week of Alley and Marini, it does feel like a part of the heart of this season will be gone.

Frontman Mitch Lucker of the popular Riverside heavy-metal band Suicide Silence died following a motorcycle crash late Wednesday night in Huntington Beach.

Lucker, 28, was pronounced dead at 6:17 a.m. Thursday at UCI Medical Center in Orange, according to the Orange County corner's office. The singer was involved in the accident not long after posting a photo to his Twitter feed in which he appeared to be costumed for Halloween.

"There's no easy way to say this," the band wrote in a statement posted on its Facebook page. "Mitch passed away earlier this morning from injuries sustained during a motorcycle accident. This is completely devastating to all of us and we offer our deepest condolences to his family. He will be forever in our hearts."

"The world lost an incredible musician today," read a tweet from the band's record label, Hawthorne-based Century Media. "Our hearts are with all friends, family, and fans. RIP Mitch Lucker, you will be missed by many."

On the band's Twitter feed Thursday it announced: “There will be a candlelight vigil held for Mitch tonight at 8pm in Huntington Beach at Main St. & 12th. This is open to anyone to attend.”

CMA Awards 2012: Willie Nelson gets an all-star tribute

CMA Awards 2012: Willie Nelson gets an all-star tribute

Photo/Video credit: Getty Images

The Country Music Association has named its lifetime achievement award after Willie Nelson, so it's only fitting that the Red-Headed Stranger was its first recipient.

Nelson was also the subject of -- and a participant in -- an all-star tribute to his career at Thursday's (Nov. 1) CMA Awards, as several artists covered some of his best-known songs before he joined them on stage for "On the Road Again." And by "joined on stage," we mean he walked out of his seat in the theater, strapped on his guitar and started playing. Willie Nelson doesn't need to warm up.

Prior to Nelson taking the stage, Charles Kelley and Hillary Scott of Lady Antebellum performed "Always on My Mind" and "Crazy" -- which is most associated with Patsy Cline, but which Nelson wrote. Blake Shelton then did "Whiskey River," joined by Nelson's harmonica player Mickey Raphael and Keith Urban on guitar.

PICS: CMA Awards 2012 red carpet

Faith Hill and Tim McGraw sang a duet of "Good Hearted Woman," and they all joined Nelson for "On the Road Again."

What did you think of the tribute to Nelson at the CMAS? Any other songs you would have liked to hear?

One Direction release 'Little Things', still 'love' you even though you're fat and terrible

One Direction dropped their new Ed Sheeran-penned single, “Little Things” — a followup to their hit “Live While We’re Young” and the second track released from the upcoming Take Me Home — this morning, and as expected, there’s nothing “little” about its online reaction.
Though the official lyric video has only been live for a few hours, it has already received over 127,000 likes and 55,000 comments on YouTube, and as young girls across the U.S. wake up today and check their Tumblrs, those metrics are only going to soar higher.
Because of that massive, adoring fanbase of occasionally irrational Directioners, I realize what I’m about to write might not be especially popular, but I’ve got to be honest: this song is kind of messed up.
Yes, it’s a pretty, strummy offering that gives each boy his own solo (for the first time, every individual’s voice is clearly recognizable), and yes, the stripped-back melody is rather lovely and characteristically Ed Sheeran-y, but it’s the lyrics that I find troubling. I mean, just look at ‘em:
EW DAILY POLL: Funnier hurricane hero?
“I know you’ve never loved the crinkles by your eyes,” sings Liam Payne during the second stanza of the song. “You’ve never loved your stomach or your thighs / the dimples in your back at the bottom of your spine / but I love them endlessly.” Later in the song, during Harry Styles’ verse, he sings, “You still have to squeeze into your jeans / but you’re perfect to me.”
Perhaps I’d hear those lyrics differently if Ed Sheeran had released this song for his own fans, but this is officially a One Direction song now, and there’s something icky about the endlessly coiffed and tailored (not to mention athletically-built) boys delivering those words. Last I checked, One Direction’s fans aren’t composed mainly of aging obesity victims — they’re little girls who range in age from about 8-14.
At the older end of that spectrum are girls currently enduring middle school, who may very well be feeling insecure about their bodies. In that case, it seems terribly misguided (or at least ruthlessly conniving) to tap into that insecurity with “Little Things” and ask girls to find their validation in One Direction’s blanket affection. But I could maybe see how people would find the words sweet.
More troubling to me are the younger fans who listen to this song. The carefree 9-year-olds who nibble on fruit roll-ups on the way to gymnastics class. The ones who watch Good Luck Charlie before bed, getting one last year out of their Sleeping Beauty nightgowns. “Little Things” presupposes insecurity in order to be effective lyrically, but for all those happily naive fans that (thankfully!) aren’t dealing with body image issues, One Direction literally provides insecurities for listeners to feel.
But that’s just part of why the whole pseudo-chivalrous “You’ll never love yourself half as much as I love you” vibe feels so disingenuous. One Direction doesn’t — they simply can’t — love each of their fans as much as they say they do. Not in the way an insecure person needs to be loved to escape that awful cycle of self-reflection. They’re an international phenomenon touring the globe and clinking glasses with the rich and beautiful, not psychiatric counselors. Their therapy by way of crooning is simply undercooked.
Give the song a listen below.

So, you tell me. Is there something insidious in those lyrics, or am I being melodramatic?

Rapper Lil Reese beats woman in viral video, causes Twitter frenzy
Cellphone video of the rapper punching and stomping a woman makes its rounds online as he rips those who posted it.

Rapper Lil Reese hasn’t denied that the footage shows him beating a woman. Instead, he has criticized those who posted it as “bored” and “broke” detractors who uploaded something “from years ago.”

Hell hath no fury like a rapper scorned.

Chicago rapper Lil Reese lit up Twitter on Thursday after an amateur cellphone video of the "Traffic" singer beating up a young woman began to make its rounds on the Internet.

Reese, who is best known for his association with Glory Boys Entertainment emcees Chief Keef and Lil Durk, didn't deny that the assailant in the clip was him, instead taking to Twitter to lash out at people who posted the video in the first place.

"The haters tryna see a mf Dwn lol Dey gotta b broke and bored wanna upload sum sh-t from years ago damnn we winnin it's 2 late," he wrote Thursday.

In the video, a young man in a red hoodie - presumably Lil Reese - gets into a heated argument with a young woman at a house party.
The woman appears visibly upset as she starts yelling, "Who the f--k let them in here?"
As the hoodie-clad youngster moves toward her and begins swinging at her face, she retorts, "Boy, don't push me, and if you want that, you can get that. But ... keep your hands to yourself though."
Lil Reese then lights into the woman, punching her in the head and then stomping on her after she falls to the ground.
The other people in the room stand idly by as the violence happens.
Online, fans of the rapper expressed their varying opinions, causing his name to trend on Twitter.
"Yo that video of Lil Reese literally stomping on a female is disturbing," one user wrote.
"The chick who got uppercut by the bus driver deserved it, but Lil Reese went overboard," another piped in.
One user even compared the rapper's attack to Chris Brown's infamous 2009 pre-Grammy rampage, during which he beat then-girlfriend Rihanna up, leaving her bruised and battered.
"Will Lil Reese be forgiven like Chris Brown? Doubt it," he wrote.

Lil Reese Not Apologetic For Assaulting Woman After Video Leaks

Seems like those GBE boys can’t stay out of trouble. Chief Keef and his Chicago rap clique have been making a ton of noise because of their music, but their controversies speak volumes as well. Lil Reese is now under fire due to a viral video which shows him beating up a young woman.

Lil Reese's Assault Video: Fans And Hip-Hop Community React

If there was any doubt that it was Reese in the video, the Def Jam signee confirmed it on Twitter early Thursday morning (October 25), blaming unnamed haters for releasing an old clip in an attempt to discredit him. "The haters tryna see a mf Dwn lol Dey gotta b broke and bored wanna upload sum sh-- from years ago damnn we winnin it's 2 late...#3hunna," he wrote. "Dis wat doin betta den da next mf bring small s--- it's nothin time 2 turn Uppp f--- it...#3hunna."

The grainy camera phone video starts off with the rising rap rookie arguing with the young woman in what appears to be her home. "Who the f--- let them in here though?" she says of Reese and his friends.

After some argument, she warns the rapper to keep his hands to himself and tells him, "They didn't stop making guns when they made yours."

From there, the drama turned physical as the two exchanged pushes and shoves before Reese backed the female into the wall and began punching her furiously. When the young lady dropped to the floor, the rapper still kicked and punched her for several seconds while she and her friends screamed in the background.

Earlier this month Reese released his Don't Like mixtape with DJ Drama and Don Canon. The tape features his latest single "Us," which was remixed by Rick Ross and Drake on Rozay's The Black Bar Mitzvah mixtape.
