Liz Cheney run for Wyoming Senate seat: Is she a lock to win?

Liz Cheney, daughter of the former vice president, is launching a Senate candidacy. But Michael Enzi, a Republican, already occupies the seat she wants.

Surprise – Liz Cheney is going to run for a Senate seat in Wyoming next year. That’s where the Cheney family has roots, since dad Dick Cheney went to school there and was Wyoming’s lone representative before he became George W. Bush’s vice president.

But it’s not like Cheney the daughter has spent years building a network in the state and saluting the crowd at Cheyenne’s iconic Frontier Days. She just bought a house there last year after spending much of her recent life in the non-cowboy country of northern Virginia.

Plus, a Republican already occupies the seat Ms. Cheney wants, Sen. Michael Enzi. He’s in his third term and is Wyoming to the core: He grew up in Thermopolis and is a former mayor of Gillette.

So does Cheney have a chance to knock off Senator Enzi in the GOP primary?

Yes. Yes, she does. At this point, she might even be the favorite.

“Cheney represents a major problem for Enzi,” judge Washington Post political analysts Chris Cillizza and Sean Sullivan.

Money is one reason. She’ll be able to raise all she needs to run in a thinly populated state where advertising is cheap. Her cash may come from out of state, because of the Cheney family’s national connections, but Enzi just won’t even be in the same league in terms of war chests. He’s clearly unprepared for a primary challenge, as at this point he’s got under $500,000 in his political accounts.

Then there’s the Cheney name. Enzi is famous for Wyoming, so the advantage here isn’t as clear as it seems from outside the state. But Mr. Cheney is still remembered by a significant portion of Wyoming voters as an alumnus, someone who rose from Casper to the highest level of US politics.

That counts for something.

Plus, it appears that Ms. Cheney will try to define Enzi as a go-along, someone who’s been content to work with party leadership and (gasp!) Democrats over the years. It remains to be seen how that plays in Wyoming as a whole, but it’s sure to get lots of attention and support from the tea party wing of the GOP and others who think the party’s problem is that it does not fight hard enough.

“Mike Enzi is a fine Republican, but he is not putting points on the board for conservatives.... We need less rudderless Republicans who shuffle around at the direction of their leadership and lobbyist friends,” conservative pundit Erick Erickson wrote Tuesday at RedState.

Of course, Cheney will have to handle the carpetbagger issue if she’s going to win. Enzi probably will try to define her as someone who’s running only because of personal ambition. It’s not like Enzi is a Northeastern moderate, like New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie (R). He’s already one of the most conservative senators.

Enzi’s best course of action may be to charge that Cheney is “too extreme” for Wyoming. She’s embraced her father’s neoconservative foreign-policy views, which included advocacy for the Iraq war and other interventionist actions. She’s charged that President Obama is “working to preemptively disarm America.”

According to Enzi, she broke her word when she entered the Senate race.

“She said that if I ran she wasn’t going to run, but obviously that isn’t correct,” Enzi said Tuesday.

An NYPD update Wednesday morning said the suspect may be driving a tan 1995 Lexis ES300 with the New York license plate #GEX1377.

Mario is described as 20 inches tall and 25 pounds. He was last seen wearing a gray t-shirt and black shorts.

'Rolling Stone' Tsarnaev cover stirs firestorm

Magazine says the response is similar to negative reaction to a Manson cover 40 years ago.

Rolling Stone'scover treatment and glam photo of Boston bombing suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev touched off a firestorm Tuesday, especially from Boston-area readers who charged that it turns an accused killer into a "rock star."

The article by contributing editor Janet Reitman is titled "The Bomber: How a popular, promising student was failed by his family, fell into radical Islam and became a monster."

The lengthy article draws upon interviews with childhood and high school friends, teachers, neighbors and law enforcement agents, the magazine says.

But it's the soft cover image that seemed to rile social media.The Bob Dylan-style photo shows the 19-year-old Tsarnaev, with long, curly hair, mustache and goatee, staring directly into the camera.

The edition doesn't come out until Friday, but the advance news and widely circulated cover photo struck a nerve, particularly in Boston and New England, where "Rolling Stone" was trending all day on Twitter.

The magazine's Facebook page was also flooded with comments, most of them negative.

A sampling:

• "I think it's wrong to make celebrities out of these people. Why give the guy the cover of Rolling Stone? TIME gave Charles Manson the cover and all the magazines carried pictures of the Columbine shooters on the covers, too. Don't make martyrs out of these people."

• "Jeff Bauman, who lost both legs, should be on cover"

• "The best example yet of why Facebook needs a 'dislike' button."

• "Look at these comments... what an awful mentality this country has... too brainwashed to read read the article or have an intelligent conversation regarding both sides of the story... I wonder how many of you would like to see him dead on the cover of THIS magazine without a trial???"

• "Is this for real?! Why don't the VICTIMS get the cover instead? It's sick that no one cares that people died, real people with lives and families, they just care about whatever will sell"

• "I hope not a single person from Boston or New England ever buys your magazine again. the most copies. Want to see true terrorism? Look to the media."

• "I am so disappointed with Rolling Stone Magazine. I have enjoyed your magazine up until now. I will no longer buy/read the mag. You have just made him a "rock star". How could you?"

Rolling Stone declined to comment to USA TODAY on the controversial cover, except to note that the outcry is reminiscent of another polarizing cover, more than 40 years ago, on cult leader and mass murderer Charles Manson.

That cover, in June 1970, including a prison interview with Manson, became one of Rolling Stone's biggest selling issues and won a National Magazine award.

As for the article itself, the profile provides new insight into Tsarnaev's life.

Excerpts:

• FBI negotiators were able to get a wounded Tsarnaev to surrender while huddled in a boat in the backyard of a Watertown, Mass., home by relaying a plea from his former wrestling coach to give up.

• In the months leading up to the bombings, Dzhokhar was increasingly isolated, with his parents away and his relations with two sisters strained. When a friend asked to meet Dzhokhar's 27-year-old brother Tamerlan, the suspected mastermind of the Boston Marathon attack, the younger brother said, "No, you don't want to meet him."

• Around 2008, his older brother Tamerlan confided to his mother that he felt like "two people" were inside of him. A friend had suggested to her that he might need a psychiatrist, but his mother instead pushed Tamerlan deeper into Islam in hopes it would cure his inner demons and growing mental instability.

• Dzhokhar, also known as Jahar, never spoke about the Sept. 11 attacks on the World Trade Center, but did slip once and told a high school friend he thought the attacks could be justified. He pointed to U.S. policies toward Muslim countries and U.S. drone strikes.

Tamerlan Tsarnaev died during a shootout with police three days after the April 15 bombings that killed three people and injured over 200 others.

Tsarnaev has pleaded not guilty to 30 counts of a federal indictment in connection with the bombings. He was being held at a prison medical facility outside Boston.

The article will be published Friday, but news of the cover treatment and glam photo quickly spread on Twitter and Facebook, prompting some sharp criticism.

"Now they get to see what we have to deal with,'' Detroit Tigers All-Star outfielder Torii Hunter said. "We've got to deal with that pitching all of the time.''

The AL's three runs will hardly be preserved on any highlight reel, but it was their biggest offensive output in four years, scoring just one run in the previous 23 innings.

The scary part for those baseball purists who like to see an occasional run, there's a good chance these same dominant pitchers will be around for quite a while. New York Mets pitcher Matt Harvey, 24, was the youngest to start and All-Star Game since Dwight Gooden in 1988, and seven All-Star pitchers were under 25.

"These guys are here for a reason,'' Minnesota Twins All-Star catcher Joe Mauer said. "It was just fun catching them. I just kept shaking numbers down there, and they kept saying yes.''

The AL pitching staff was so dominant that until Rivera's entrance in the eighth inning, the only real drama in this game occurred in the first inning when Mets starter Matt Harvey drilled Yankees second baseman Robinson Cano in the right leg. He was forced out of the game with a bruised quadriceps.
